Treating Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ or TMD) Symptoms with Botox

Recently, Dr. Terry Work has completed the specialized training required to administer Botox treatment for painful TMJ symptoms in Scottsdale. In recent years, Arizona State Dental Board has determined that dentists are now allowed to administer Botox because the facial and neck muscles are considered part of the dental environment.

Studies have shown that botox injections have been proven to provide long-term relief of painful TMD symptoms by reducing the intensity of muscle movements of the temporalis and masseter muscles, making it an option for people who have tried other therapies with no success.

In episode #93 of The Dental Works Podcast, Dr. Work and Ted talk about these recent changes and go more into depth about what we can provide for our patients. Listen to episode "#93 - BOTOX" of the Dental Works podcast here!

What is the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)?

In the jaw, there is a joint called the temporomandibular joint which is the main muscle that we use every day to eat, swallow, talk, etc. There can be many reasons that cause TMJ disorder including but not limited to genetics, stress, jaw injuries, and clenching and grinding. The symptoms of TMD can be painful and many patients are not able to find relief even after completing other therapies like stress management, acupuncture & physical therapy. Botox treatment can offer a long-term solution for pain relief from TMD symptoms.

How Does Botox Help with TMJ Disorder Pain?

Botox is a non-surgical procedure that involves injecting Botox into the affected muscle area. Botox can relieve the pain and discomfort you are having by limiting the muscle movement of the temporalis and masseter muscles and eliminating involuntary contractions in the jaw. By disengaging those overworked muscles, it will relieve jaw tension and pain.

Keep in mind that botox treatment for the symptoms of TMD will not cure your TMD but it is recommended as a  complementary treatment to other TMD therapies.

Dr. Terry Work believes in the importance of being cautious when using Botox treatment for TMJ symptoms. Proper use requires a full evaluation and proper diagnosis of TMD.

What to Expect During Your Consultation for Botox Treatment

During your consultation, Dr. Work will ask you about your full medical history and how long you have been experiencing your symptoms. Dr. Work will complete a physical exam on your face and jaw and check for any popping or clicking by opening and closing your jaw. In some cases, a panoramic radiograph may be taken to check your bite and alignment. Proper use of botox treatment requires a proper diagnosis of TMD.
