Simple Extraction Vs. Surgical Extractions

Tooth extractions are common dental procedures performed to remove teeth that are damaged, decayed, or causing other oral health issues. While we always strive to save natural teeth for our patients here at Dental Works, extractions are sometimes necessary. We may need to remove a tooth for various reasons, including severe decay, advanced gum disease, trauma, overcrowding, or wisdom teeth complications.

What is a Simple Tooth Extraction?

A simple extraction is a straightforward procedure used to remove teeth that are visible above the gum line and have a relatively intact structure. This type of extraction is typically performed on teeth that have not broken off at the gum line and are not severely impacted.

Simple extractions are often required for:
•  Severely decayed teeth that cannot be restored with a filling or crown
•  Loose teeth due to advanced periodontal disease
•  Teeth causing overcrowding in orthodontic treatments
•  Baby teeth that have not fallen out naturally

What is the Process for a Simple Extraction?

A simple extraction is performed under local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. The dentist uses an instrument called an elevator to loosen the tooth, then extracts it using forceps. Because the tooth is fully erupted and easily accessible, the procedure is relatively quick and minimally invasive.

What is Recovery Like?

Recovery from a simple extraction is usually smooth and quick. Patients may experience mild swelling or discomfort, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications and cold compresses. The extraction site typically heals within a few days to a week, and patients are advised to follow post-procedure care instructions, such as avoiding hard foods and not using straws, to prevent dry socket.

What is a Surgical Extraction?

A surgical tooth extraction is a more complex procedure required when a tooth is not easily accessible. This includes teeth that are impacted, broken at the gum line, or have long or curved roots requiring additional care.

When is a Surgical Extraction Needed?

•  Impacted wisdom teeth that have not fully erupted
•  Severely broken or fractured teeth
•  Teeth with extensive decay below the gum line
•  Teeth with complicated root structures

What is the Process for a Surgical Tooth Extraction?

Surgical extractions are usually performed by an oral surgeon or an experienced dentist. The procedure often involves local anesthesia, but sedation or general anesthesia may be used for more complex cases. The dentist or surgeon makes an incision in the gum tissue to access the tooth. In some cases, the tooth may need to be broken into smaller pieces for easier removal. Stitches may be required to close the surgical site.

Recovery After a Surgical Extraction

Recovery from a surgical extraction takes longer than a simple extraction. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are more common, and pain management may involve prescription medications. Patients should follow post-operative instructions carefully, including maintaining oral hygiene, eating soft foods, and avoiding strenuous activities to promote healing. Full recovery can take one to two weeks.

Are There Alternatives to Extracting Teeth?

In some cases, extractions can be avoided with alternative treatments. Some of these options include: root canal therapy, dental crowns, orthodontic treatment, and gum disease treatment.

While extractions are sometimes unavoidable, consulting with Dental Works about available options can help determine the best course of action for maintaining a healthy smile. Call us today at (480) 360-7529.
