Teeth Cleaning

Young lady smiling with a perfect smileYou probably maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing every day and may think that is enough to keep your oral health in good condition. Well, that may not be enough, and that is why our dental team will schedule you for regular dental cleanings. While you will remove bacteria and plaque by brushing and flossing at home, often you will not be able to get rid of some plaque and tartar or calculus. It is for this reason that our dental specialists at Dental Works want you to visit us every six months for a professional dental cleaning.

Professional Teeth Cleaning Procedure

There are a number of steps that our dental hygienists and dentist follow when performing teeth cleaning procedures.

Initial Oral Exam

First, our dental hygienist will use a small mirror to check the inside of the mouth. If any obvious issues are detected, they will pass the information on to our dentist. However, if they find something of major concern, they may halt the cleaning entirely and immediately consult with our dentist on the way forward.

Removing Plaque and Tartar

While brushing and flossing daily at home helps remove dental plaque and bacteria, it may be hard to reach plaque that is hiding between teeth as well as along the gumline. Only a dental professional can remove that hidden plaque and the one that has hardened to form tartar. Professional teeth cleanings are more thorough compared to what you do at home. The reason is that a hygienist or dentist can use special tools such as a scaler to slowly remove plaque and tartar.

Teeth Polishing

The hygienist uses gritty tooth polish as well as a special high-powered brush in order to polish your teeth. We may ask you to choose your favorite tooth polish flavor.

Professional Flossing

After polishing the teeth, the hygienist will floss them. This helps ward off any plaque that may be lurking between your teeth. Additionally, flossing helps the hygienist know where bleeding of gums is occurring if any.

Rinsing the Mouth

At this point, the hygienist squirts some water inside your mouth whereby you are required to swish. We then use suction to help drain the water off the mouth. Rinsing the mouth helps get rid of any residual tooth polish.

Final Checkup

Once the professional teeth cleaning is done, our dentist comes in to do a final checkup. In case there are no oral health issues, then you are all set. If you have any questions you may need to be answered, it is time to ask our dentist. Afterward, we will schedule you for your next dental cleaning and exam.

How Long Does Teeth Cleaning Procedure Take?

A professional teeth cleaning lasts for about 30 to 60 minutes. During this time, you lie back comfortably in a dental chair as our team examines your teeth and gums and cleans your mouth, and polishes the enamel. However, if you need to have X-rays taken, your appointment could take longer. Also, if dental issues are discovered, you may need to discuss the treatment options with our dentist.

Come to our dental office at Dental Works for your routine dental cleaning. Set up an appointment today by calling (480) 360-7529.
