Root Canal

When tooth decay spreads deep into the roots, it can cause an infection and put your oral health at risk

A root canal eliminates the source of the infection with the goal of relieving pain and preserving your natural tooth.

How Does Root Canal Treatment Work?

After thoroughly numbing the treatment area, your dentist will create a small hole in the top of your tooth and use it to access the infected nerves, blood vessels, and pulp within. This material will be cleared out, the inner chamber of the tooth will be sanitized, and a rubberlike substance will be used to fill the empty space. Depending on the size of the tooth being treated, you may receive a permanent dental crown for added support and protection.

Root Canal Treatment Provides Many Benefits

Pain Relief

The pain from a root canal infection can keep you up at night and make it difficult to eat or focus on your daily activities. Root canal treatment eliminates discomfort by removing bacteria and infected pulp and nerve tissue.

Preserve the Tooth

A root canal can restore the form and function of your natural tooth. When possible, it is always preferred to preserve a tooth rather than extract it. An extracted tooth will need to be replaced with a dental implant or another restoration, which is more complex and expensive compared to a root canal.

Conservative Treatment

While root canal therapy has a reputation for being painful, it is actually a conservative treatment; many patients find that it feels similar to getting a filling. Our dentists only use the most advanced technology, X-rays, and techniques and continually stay on top of continuing education to refine their skills.

Restore Oral Health

Tooth decay or infection puts the rest of your oral health at risk. Bacteria can quickly spread to surrounding teeth and gums and create more widespread dental problems, such as advanced periodontal disease. By undergoing a root canal now, you can avoid costly treatment in the future.

How the Infection Progresses

The pulp becomes infected. Plaque builds up and destroys the enamel and dentin. Bacteria forms an abscess. Infection can spread to the bloodstream.

Are You Experiencing Any of These Symptoms? You May Need a Root Canal

  • Toothache

  • Dental sensitivity to hot or cold

  • Tooth discoloration

  • Swollen gums

  • Chronic bad breath

  • Abscess on the gums

If one or more of these symptoms is bothering you, it's important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Contact our office in Scottsdale so one of our dentists can perform a thorough examination and diagnose the problem. Whether you require a root canal or treatment for another issue, we'll be able to provide care that ends your discomfort and gets you on track to better dental health.

I've had some bad experiences in the past getting dental work done. It was recommended from a wife's co worker that I give Dental Works a try, and I'm glad I did. I've started the work needed in my mouth, and my experiences have been amazing. The staff is incredibly interested in putting any anxiety that you have at ease, and they are really good at making sure you are comfortable throughout your process. I would highly recommend them to anyone who gets nervous about getting dental work done.

Your Comfort Is Our Top Priority Sedation Options Are Available

The thought of undergoing a root canal may seem a bit intimidating, but it's actually a virtually painless procedure, especially when performed by a highly trained dentist like Terry Lee Work or Mary Ann WorkFor those who are nervous about their root canal, we offer different sedation options to ensure your comfort at all times. This allows patients to sit back in the chair, relax, and have little to no recollection of the procedure, depending on which sedation method is selected. We strive to create a welcoming environment that helps patients feel at ease during their visits with us.

What to Expect During Treatment

Our highly trained dentists can provide you with immediate relief to eliminate your symptoms and protect your oral health.
Our highly trained dentists can provide you with immediate relief to eliminate your symptoms and protect your oral health.

Consultation

Our dentists evaluate your teeth with X-rays to determine if a root canal is the best course of treatment. In some cases, we may use a CT machine to help identify the pulp chamber and canals to plan a precise and painless procedure. If the damage is too extensive for a root canal, our dentists will inform you of your options, such as tooth extraction and replacement with a dental implant.

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is administered to the treatment area to ensure your comfort. Our dentists will also administer any selected sedation options during this time.

Access Point

Our dentist will carefully create an opening in the tooth, acting as an access point to reach the pulp chamber and canals.

Removal

All of the inflamed or infected pulp, nerves, and blood vessels are removed from the inner chamber of the tooth.

Disinfection

After the tissue is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected.

Filling

The tooth is filled with a rubberlike dental material to replace the pulp and sealed to prevent food or bacteria from entering. Depending on your specific case, you may receive a temporary filling to seal the area off from debris and infection while your dentist monitors your healing process.

Crown

If needed, the temporary filling will be removed and replaced with a permanent filling once you've healed. If you received root canal treatment on a larger tooth, like a molar, a dental crown will be placed to protect the natural tooth structure.

Don't Delay Care The Importance of Root Canal Treatment

Did you know that the majority of dental problems start off as a seemingly harmless cavity? While it may not seem like a big deal at the time, an untreated cavity can eventually infect the soft tissues, or pulp, that reside in the root canals. The pulp contains tissue, blood vessels, and nerves. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, treatment is required to save the tooth. If these signs are ignored and the infection persists, more serious oral health issues can develop, such as dental abscesses or the need for tooth extraction.

Skip a Visit to the Endodontist And Receive the Care You Need From Your Trusted Local Dentists

While endodontists are specially trained in treating issues of the dental pulp, there's no reason to wait for an appointment at the endodontist's office when you have access to highly experienced dentists like Terry Lee Work and Mary Ann Work. Our dentists both served as Dental Officers in the U.S. Navy and have over 50 years of combined experience performing a range of general, cosmetic, and restorative treatments, including root canals.

What Is the Cost of Root Canal Treatment? Financing Options Are Available

Cost Factors

The price of a root canal depends on a few factors, such as which tooth was treated and how many canals are located within the tooth. For example, the back teeth, also known as the maxillary molars, contain three roots. Other teeth only have one root. Here at our Scottsdale dental office, root canal therapy ranges from $929 to $1296 per tooth. We'll be able to give you an accurate estimate during your consultation with us.

Financing Options

We understand that it may be difficult to work the unexpected cost of root canal treatment into your budget. That is why we accept CareCredit® and Sunbit, a third-party financing company that splits costs into monthly payment plans. This gives patients greater flexibility and the time they need to pay for treatment. If you have any questions about the process and how it works, our staff is happy to help.

What Happens After a Root Canal?

After receiving a root canal, your tooth may need an extra layer of reinforcement to protect it from damage. Patients will undergo a two-step dental procedure in which they are fitted for a custom-made crown. A crown protects the treated tooth's structure, allowing it to withstand tremendous force so you can eat and chew like normal. Without a crown, a tooth that has been treated with a root canal is vulnerable to cracking or other forms of damage. Once your custom crown has been fabricated, you will return to our Scottsdale office to have it placed.
